What is NGO?
NGO stands for Non-Governmental Organization, and is a term used to generally refer to organizations that are not part of the government. NGO’s in Bangladesh play an important role in providing services and development activities in areas such as education, health, economic empowerment, environment protection and so on.
Starting an NGO can be a daunting task but with proper preparation and research it can be done. The following steps will help guide you through the process of setting up an NGO in Bangladesh:
1. Draft your NGO mission statement – This should clearly state what type of NGO you intend to create – what will its objectives be? What kind of impact do you wish to have? This statement should reflect your NGO’s philosophy and values.
2. Set up a team – NGO’s need to be run and managed by a core group of individuals, so it is important to recruit the right people for the job. Your NGO will need to have an executive board, which should include members with different backgrounds and expertise in various areas such as law, finance, marketing etc.
3. Choose a legal structure – This refers to the type of NGO you want to create – whether it will be a private organization or public NGO? NGOs in Bangladesh are generally registered as either societies or trusts. It is important to understand the differences between these two structures before making your decision.
4. Register and obtain licenses – Once you have chosen your NGO’s legal structure, registration documents must be completed and submitted to the NGO Bureau. This process can take up to several months, so it is important to keep track of deadlines and remain in regular communication with NGO Bureau staff throughout the process. In some cases, you may need to obtain other licenses in order for your NGO to operate legally in Bangladesh.
5. Fundraising – NGO’s need financial backing in order to be successful and sustain their operations, so fundraising activities are essential. It is important to identify potential donors or sponsors that share the same values as your NGO, and then design an effective fundraising strategy based on those connections
By following these steps, you will be well on your way to setting up a successful NGO in Bangladesh!
